Before and After: “Before” – above was the view from the track above Motuoapa in 2011.
“After” below is May 2017. It should be all completed in July in time for the 2017 summer season.
This new $6Million 158 berth Marina development was necessary to replace the Tokaanu marina where the mouth of the tailrace has been silting up and is no longer suitable for larger boats and keel yachts.
Some locals are concerned that whilst a new marina is welcome, the plan for larger longer berths up to 14 metres is excessive and not suitable for the local boat club members.
Most of their boats are 6, 7, or 8 metres – not over ten metres as provided for in the new layout. The berth fees are currently $280 per metre (i.e. $2800 for ten metres) incl. GST. This is the same fee structure as at the other crown owned marinas at Taupo and Nukuhau. (Submissions to the proposed bert fees close on May 31 – to motuoapafees@dia.govt.nz or post to P. O. Box 256 Taupo 3351.)
