A post reveals TRM may have been misleading everyone by calling it a “swing bridge”?

Shame the correct term is not used. When I lived in Turangi (1965 – 73) we called it the swing bridge. My father, an engineer on the TPD, told me that it was in fact a suspension bridge. Many years later I was involved in building suspension bridges in the Waikato and Northern King Country so I understand the difference. Swing bridges are a different thing altogether.
Turangi residents are still debating about whether to adopt a new name, other than Major Jones Bridge. Of course, DOC will have the last say, but want your advice and encouragement.
Various other names were being considered until David Parker posted:
The original bridge was built in 1955 by Major A R Jones, an Army Engineer from Waiouru Military Camp. He & the Army Engineers plus cadets built the bridge….hence the name. Tis a good name for the new bridge to carry on for the next 80 – 100 years. Real history.
