SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed manages all inmate concerns at TRM) has received another complaint about these Daily Reports. 

Apparently the editorial department hidden in the laundry try to keep fishos informed but have been distracted by too much other stuff recently.  The inmates want more fishy stuff.

We thought there is only so much readers can endure re fishing stories with dead trout images, without becoming tedious?.  We thought we had already pushed the Tongariro River fishing success stories to the limit?  We imagined you need more controversial interesting entertaining stuff?

But no – some inmates never get enough fishy stories…

The truth is that so far in 2017 the outstanding events are:

The recovery of trout condition on Lake Taupo now evidenced by the fish being landed in the river. 

The biggest complaint of course is so many get broken off.  My own success rate of landing to releases is about 50%.  (Half of those are due to Pumpkin – but that is another story) 

This is wonderful and a tribute to the fighting spirit of so many fresh run Rainbows. We have even heard stories of big Brown trout fighting epic battles as well?  The overall condition of the trout can only be described as superb – certainly the best for the last ten years in our experience. 

Everyone has their own theories why?  Obviously the basic diet has improved – smelt numbers have recovered.  Is it just natures cycles?  The latest theory is that the extremely high lake levels lately have improved the size and fecundity of smelt to fatten up the trout.  DoC (Department of Conservation manage the Taupo Fishery) will no doubt claim full credit for their management policy…

The second outstanding memory of spring to summer to autumn was the weather.  TRM inmates blame Dan – how can a TV weather-man be so confident every night when his forecasts have been wrong about 80% of the time. 

The weather has really been appalling.  The rain graphs do not show how bad it is as they do not measure the wind. The photos don’t show the wind.  It has been relentless.

The way we measure it is by how many times TRM’s gate signs get blown away.  Several times they became a real danger to the public with signs flipping off the chains.  

So far in the last few months I have had to unhook them more than in the last twelve years.

Every time it stops raining the wild wind gusts have ruined any chance of casting a fly. It keeps changing direction to keep fishos on the move.

This disruptive weather pattern has continued for at least the last six-seven months. 

“Summer” may have been a sick joke, but every time the weather turns dirty the river fishing improved…

But the point about the fishing is that we don’t want to appear boring by repeating and thrashing the good fishing message too many times. 

Many anglers wish we would shut up about it.  They want the river fishing all to themselves.  They imagine it is already too crowded. 

Of course SWMBO wants more people to enjoy it as it really is developing into a great season.

So SWMBO’s editorial policy in these reports has been to deliberately providing more variety in the reports – there are plenty of others who will tell you via facebook whatever about the trout fishing.
