I will be staying in Turangi 2nd week in Jan so will hook up with you then.
Name Age address?
Hi my name is Sam Anderson 52 year old self confessed fly fishaholic.
I am a certified fly casting instructor and have wanted to be a fishing guide for 34 years.
2 When and where did you start fishing the Tongariro?
Started fishing the Tongariro River before I realised a full time job would only be a distraction to fishing. Concentrating on dry fly fishing the riffles and runs using Cicada and Stimulator patterns. Have never looked back as work seems so over rated.
During a bicycle ride along the Tongariro River trail on a warm summers day the sound of the Cicada had been deafening. Spending a hour watching trophy brown trout slurping Cicadas off the surface of a crystal clear Tongariro and well as they say the rest is history.
4 Which is your favourite pool? Why?
Being a riffles and runs dry fly purest preference is given to covering as much water as possible during the day.
A mid summers excursion on the lower Tongariro – on arrival finding a box full of nymphs and no Cicada or Stimulator patterns.
A quick visit to Creel tackle to load up with stimulators and Cicadas saved the day.
6 Your best Tongariro achievement?
Has to be the first perfectly formed D loop performed when mastering the Tongariro Roll cast.
The Tongariro River is the trophy brown trout dry fly fishing mecca of New Zealand.
8 Which is your favourite fishing style – dry? nymph? streamer?
Well hello – Winter bobber fishing with nymphs, huh might as well be chech nymphing. The Tongariro in summer time on the dry fly.
9 Your favourite Tongariro fly fishing trip?
The dream was to be an endorsed angler from a leading tackle supplier such as Sage.. The day I was approached by Dave’s gourmet flies based out of Turangi was the beginning of this wonderful journey. Now there are product endorsement lined up the thoughts of working for a living are a distant memory. Follow the dream and become a leading authority on fishing the Tongariro is a seven figure salary. Every day on the Tongariro River = paradise.
