State of local emergency declared in Ruapehu District, residents prepare to evacuate

Above headlines this morning are scary:

So the first reaction for TRM inmates was to check the Tongariro River flow. Remember last week, during the cyclone emergency, it rose from 27 to about 30 cumecs.

TRM does not have any evacuation plans as all the fishos have already deserted us. They are our best barometer for indicating weather conditions. When the wading and casting become too difficult, they all leave. We could not take any photos of it peaking as it was too dark, so below is an old photo (thank you to Judy Whyman) clearing snags from the raging river under the SH1 bridge at about 300 cumecs.

After re-reading that we need to make sure we are not found guilty of spreading more misleading fake news? The following photos taken outside TRM’s reception and up and down Tauaphi Road before 9 am this morning may be more indicative of another mild gentle soggy autumn day in Turangi. There are no signs of anyone evacuating. Most (including SWMBO) are still in bed! Once again, they prove you cannot believe everything you read.
