What a wonderful time of the year when we are such fortunate recipients of so much good cheer.
Today’s report is to sincerely thank all the readers out there in cyberspace for their continued support and encouragement for TRM’s daily reports to keep them better informed or entertained on all fishy matters on the Tongariro and from Turangi. We really feel privileged to have such loyal engaged fishy inmates and readers.
Purely to maintain the TRM tradition of good cheer that has been followed for the last 13 years, those fortunate readers who devour the TRM Daily Report regularly but never stay here, usually kindly donate the traditional bottle of plonk or craft beer (?) as their equivalent annual subscription. What a fine concept! This is entirely voluntary of course – just a few cents a day as appreciation to let us know we are on track.
Many anglers have holiday homes here or live in Taupo or where they can manage day trips, but still rely on TRM Daily Reports to keep their passion for fly fishing alive and well throughout the year. Or when their season is closed, TRM keep them up to date with anything local or fishy news that may be of wider interest.
Sometimes the fishing is slow so we have widened our reporting net beyond the Tongariro River to comment on many other touristy topics and good causes that need airing.
Many imagine this is all our work but we rely on so many other ‘ghost writers’ as well sending articles or their gripes to fill in all the gaps – particularly with the more contentious issues.
For the elderly scribe this is an arduous labour of love happily directed at TRM inmates, although we are aware of the wider interest out there by the surprisingly still increasing thousands reading facebook updates as well.
So your ‘annual subs’ are most appreciated and will inspire the content to continue to provide a daily mix of information and entertainment and weird fishy humour to start your day.
Just remember at all times to make sure you read between the lines as well.
This spirit of goodwill was apparent again today after receiving another generous “annual subscription” from a TRM Daily Report addict who commented on how much he enjoyed TRM’s Daily Reports.
All TRM reports are factual and true except for the parts we invent.
Sometimes the reports deliberately are composed to go ‘over the top’ to emphasise certain issues where inmates have remarked or complained on the unfairness or injustices, whatever.
SWMBO should apologise for any upsets that may have been generated – there are too many to list….
The intention was to “air” contentious issues to look at all sides of arguments.
We have to admit controversy is good for us bloggers’ ratings but our aim is more to increase wider interest in topics that are too often neglected by the mass media. TRM do not shy away from arguments. The over-whelming response confirms our inmates enjoyed 2017 and we look forward to maintaining the pace in 2018.
Below are some local holiday suggestions:
1 Trout fishing the Tongariro – a world class wild trout river open all year round. It should be on everyone’s bucket list.
2 Biking/walking Tongariro River Trail – from 3 km to 13 km loop up the Tongariro River.
3 Taranaki Falls – a 2 hour walk from Whakapapa. Better than the Tongariro Crossing and no crowding or parking hassles!
4 Trout Centre – The next Kids Fishing days are Wednesday 3rd January and Sunday 21st January. As they will be fully booked for both days, book early. This is the only place you can buy smoked trout but you need a kid to catch it.
5 Climbing Mt. Ruapehu – Summer only in a guided party from TRM – see images below. This is better and easier and less hassle and more memorable than the Tongariro Crossing.
6 Rafting with Rafting NZ – adrenaline pumping 14 km with 50 rapids.
7 Lake Rotopounamu – walk a circuit around a hidden lake – voted by NZ Herald readers as our best kept wilderness secret..
8 Tramping Mt. Tihia – even more secret with no signage on a hidden track with views north over Lake Taupo, south over Tongariro National Park.
9 Tongariro Alpine Crossing – has to be listed as it remains NZ’s most popular (& congested & crowded?) one day walk.
But seriously, tourists do not come here expecting parking hassles and queuing and delays. The better alternative options are 2, 3, 5 & 7 above. To avoid complaints from tourists, TRM will continue to encourage the alternative options instead.
10 Visit the only underground power station in the North Island. (? You can’t in Turangi yet, but we are working on that…) Meanwhile you can admire their closed door, email your complaint to your MP and visit the Pillars of Hercules and Poutu Dam or walk the bush trails nearby which still make the trip worthwhile.
