Kia ora,
As part of the State Highway 1 (SH1) Tīrau to Waiouru Accelerated Maintenance project, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is carrying out road rebuilding at 4 work sites on SH1 between Taupō and Tūrangi. Still to be completed is work at the SH1/Kiko Road intersection (overnight stop/go from mid- to late March to early April) and at the southern end of Motuoapa (overnight stop/go from late March to early April).
Planned road maintenance, in addition to T2W, is also being undertaken by multiple contractors in some of the project areas – one of which is Motuoapa. From Tuesday 27 January to Thursday 5 March (weather-dependent), contractor MS Civil will undertake pavement rehabilitation on a 650m section of SH1 in Motuoapa (please see the aerial map above).
This repair work is required to improve the road long term and will include removing the existing pavement, replacing base layers, then laying asphalt. Work will be conducted during the day only, from 6am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Stop/go traffic management will be in place while the work is underway. One lane will remain open to traffic and pedestrians at all times.
The contractor will be monitoring any delays, and all work will be undertaken as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption to road users and residents. We’ve provided assurance to affected residents and businesses that they will retain suitable access to their properties.
Throughout the work, local electronic message boards and the Journey Planner at journeys.nzta.govt.nz will be utilised to communicate up-to-date information. If at any time you have queries or concerns, the NZTA and MS Civil teams can be contacted per below:

Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential maintenance. The T2W project is now only months away from completion, and along with this additional work, we’re confident the results will make the wait and any inconvenience worthwhile.
