Tongariro River peaked at over 700 cumecs…

Images of Tongariro flow below the SH 1 bridge.

Image above the road bridge at 7 pm Friday.

For a short video of the Tongariro River flowing under the main road bridge at over 700 cumecs, to get a better impression of the speed and immense power of the flow, go to TRM Facebook…  Meanwhile compare the above images to ‘normal’ flow below at less than 30 cumecs..

This flood will roll over all the river stones and clean up the river to get rid of the slippery gunge to make wading much safer, but removes much of the trout food too.  Most of the recovering trout will have been swept back to Lake Taupo but look out for a big spawning run of brown trout following this flood.
