Following the report of raft fishing on the Tongariro delta, SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed is manager of everything at TRM) was contacted for more info for an “unguided” school holiday Tongariro River raft fishing trip… Whichever option you choose, do not rely on SWMBO for any trout fishing info or advice beyond TRM. So below is the info they requested on the “delta” option. Contact Rafting NZ direct for more.
TROPHY FISHING BY RAFT FROM $949 (for up to three anglers)
Tongariro River Delta Raft-Fishing Adventure – Season: January to March
When it comes to brown trout fishing, Taupo anglers and fishermen from all over the world dream of having the opportunity to delicately present a fly to a trophy fish and engage a battle with one of NZ’s premier sport fish. Lake Taupo is home to some of NZ’s largest and wildest brown trout. Fishing these waters is an opportunity not to be missed.
Brown trout are spawning in the summer months and the Lower Tongariro becomes home to hundreds of large fish, sometimes pushing well over the 10-pound trophy mark. Many of the ‘monsters’ you encounter by river raft will have never seen an angler before as they live deep in the lake during the year and will only enter the shallows of the Tongariro when they are ready to spawn.
The playground for this trophy fishing adventure, the Lower Tongariro, is hard to access and very hard to fish due to overgrown banks with large willow trees and deep undercut banks which is the perfect habitat for growing large, lazy trout. The use of a river raft in these brown trout fishing trips has proven to be a valuable tool while spotting and sneaking up on feeding trout, not to mention the added ability to access water which anglers don’t usually see. The best months for this trophy fishing adventure are January through to the end of March as this is when the big numbers of fish will be moving in, giving us countless opportunities in any given day. As it will be summer and temperatures are high anglers can look forward to fishing a dry fly rig which adds to the excitement of spotting your fish and then seeing him take your well-presented fly from the surface.
Brown trout will be our target trophy fish but expect to see and hook good numbers of rainbow trout as well which have called the lower river home before entering back into the lake. This brown trout fishing river raft trip is perfect for anglers who want to see plenty of large trout and enjoy a soft, gentle float through the crystal waters of the Lower Tongariro River without the fear of having to challenge any white water rapids. (If you, on the other hand, prefer a bit of adrenaline action, have a look at our Tongariro White Water fly fishing option.)
At the completion of the brown trout fishing adventure we will reach the Tongariro River Delta and enter Lake Taupo. From here we will be picked up by motorboat and taken back to Tokaanu Wharf to enjoy a well-deserved cold beer.
