Ross Baker
Ross Baker See the Daily Report and comments and photo evidence by x-Councillor Rob Henderson to see what we think of so-called “freedom campers”… These are not the responsible self contained camper vans in your photo but are free loaders who abuse the environment where ever they camp and leave their rubbish behind them. Queenstown and other tourist districts have banned them. Taupo needs to police them more vigorously.

Barb Mackay

Barb Mackay There shouldn’t be any freedom campers in the Taupo town ship. There is a camping site at the airport and use the camping grounds. They camp in the floatplane car park and leave no room for the public, tourists etc. Five mile bay is ok but they shouldn’t be able to park in the car park right on the lake edge.

Nadege Crocker So… You put up a photo of a self contained zone…. With campers without toilet ? That s the problem they are rules and no one to inforce them . Be realistic about who uses it. Do your job and actually make money. Fine them . Lake front will be so much nicer.
Vijay Naiker

Vijay Naiker I don’t know why this is even a question. Freedom camping should not be allowed near lake Taupo. I have seen enough of filth when I lived in Taupo for 3.5 years. Takes business away from holiday parks, hotels and motels. No a great idea to continue with this. Council needs to do something about it.

Fee Holdsworth

Fee Holdsworth Really not happy as a NEW ZEALANDER we have the privilege of paying $30+ to stay the night in a DOC hut bookings must be made, that has no rubbish collection or free flush toilets where dishes are often washed or hot showers so why then do these “self-contained”- scoff for the most part not have to pay a minimal parking fee?? At the very least! (Sorry rant over)

Hana Ransfield

Hana Ransfield I don’t have a problem with them they have been there for awhile now and they are self contained

Judi McGreevy

Judi McGreevy I do not have a problem with them as long as they are self contained

Beth Eyre

Beth Eyre have no problems with campers

Annette Richards
Annette Richards I think they’ve proved they don’t respect the opportunity to free camp in our country, if you look at how they’ve treated our parks, open spaces and amenities – provided for by ratepayers money. They should have to pay for campgrounds or doc accommodat…

Jan-Gren Treweek

Jan-Gren Treweek I don,t have a problem with them. As long as they tidy up after themselves and are self contained,. why not. Taupo needs all the business it can get right now. No matter where they spend there money.

Warren Knight

Warren Knight Well there’s no such thing as freedom really, especially camping right so it is simple when the visitors arrive here the responsibility is of the tour operator to explain this reality, surely it is simple okay, so the answer is even more simple …See More

Denise Chappell

Denise Chappell No go to the camp ground, not free camping in our beautiful town. You cant do that any where else. So NO NO NO….

Christine Stirling

Christine Stirling Get rid of them they make a bloody mess and leave rubbish in our town
