Local angler Dave Lehndorf with some BIG fish (i.e. see image below) from an unamed little river way over the hill west of the Central Plateau. TRM cannot name these rivers for obvious “security” reasons…
Further to the report yesterday on the same theme of “other” trout fishing rivers in this region:
Now the season is about to be closed and anglers are planning trips into the back country “wilderness” locations for next summer, we should warn the rivers to the east of Taupo – Mohaka, Ngaruroro, Rangitaiki, Taharua, and many other smaller less well known rivers, now get constant traffic during the warmer summer (dry fly) months.
Huts are often booked out by others – see image on right…
Some of the more accessible so-called wilderness (?) rivers get too thrashed.
Comparatively the many less well known rivers to the west are almost neglected and offer equally superb fishing in remote locations, but a good guide (like Dave?) is essential.

Isn’t it encouraging to see Dave’s new fly fishing novices, a recently retired couple, being introduced to the mysteries and delights of trout fishing in the wilderness. More fun than golf. You never know who you might meet in these more remote back country locations…
Dave has also sent the following – what a great gesture:
Ross, we are taking this seat I made down to the Nui rip at 2 o’clock this Friday For Barbara Thompson, who unfortunately drowned on the Nui and Barbara Pickering from Taranaki, who we lost to cancer. Both ladies fished the rip regular so anyone that is new or who had fished with these lovely lady’s are welcome to come and say a few words in memory David Lehndorf. Taupo
