TRM have been asked by guests booking in for the holidays – does DOC have another similar programme for 2015-2016 season?

WIth the count-down towards the holidays it is timely to say a BIG thank you to DOC.

The Department of Conservation are more obvious locally as they play a wider role in small tourist towns like Turangi than in the larger centres.

In particular they are responsible for the maintenance of the many walking, hiking tracks throughout the region which are in high demand for the holiday season.  At TRM the anglers are even more aware of their maintenance efforts keeping tracks open along the Tongariro River Trail after they get swept away from the usual floods. – such as the rerouting of the trail above the Cicada Pool.

Anglers look forward to the trail continuing further up and down river – particularly where traditional anglers access tracks were destroyed by Waikato Regional Council contractors with their flood protection works.

For bikers and hikers there are so many improvements to the Tongariro River Trail with several new detours constructed to ease the contours and signage and resurfacing with improved drainage to make them accessible in all weathers, etc.

So, on behalf of many bikers and hikers and tourists we just want to pass on a well deserved appreciation to the DOC staff and contractors involved.  They do a great job.  The favourable comments that we receive back from tourists otherwise go unreported.

Also we need to acknowledge the value of the monthly fishing reports that have been published during 2015 – excellent factual reports to advise anglers of fish trap results compared to previous years etc.  Previously the Target Taupo magazine was the most important publication keeping anglers informed as the communication from the fishery managers to their stakeholders – anglers, but now that appears to have been replaced by these monthly updates.  They will never replace Glenn Maclean’s comprehensive Target Taupo articles but at least they are still trying.

Naturally they can never please everyone.  But particularly after receiving so many negative comments from anglers about DOC’s involvement in their management of the Taupo fishery, it is pleasing that we can acknowledge and thank them for all the good works mentioned above – that otherwise go unreported.
