Tongariro lower river pools, after the flood…

Photos from the Braids car park heading down the track to Reeds Pool. The last time there was a flood over 700 cumecs in 2018 it wiped out the walking track beside the Log Pool so we were expecting more damage. This time there was not as much erosion apart from tons of pumice and gravel and sand spread around along the track. The river was flowing around 35 cumecs.

After previous floods, the bypass around in front of Tongariro Lodge was worth fishing but this time it has filled up with sediment and not flowing at all.

One of the concrete pipes below the old Plank Pool is still in place under the swirl. (History lesson: Photo below shows pipes forming a bridge across the Braids in June 2006, but it was washed out by a flood of similar energy within two days. Only the buried pipes remain.)

Regular lower river anglers should still be able to identify the pools and runs below:

Angler access is still the same. The old angler walking track, that was wiped out in 2018, has not eroded further.

Reeds Pool beach has been moved further downriver…

Anglers report “we got off lightly”, whatever that means…
