As the sudden flood on the Tongariro River last weekend exceeded 700 cumecs, which made it the highest level for over five years, we have waited for the river to retreat to around 40 cumecs on Tuesday to post some photos from the town pools. The idea was to try to illustrate any damage to the existing most popular pools.

Tim has provided his videos on Facebook below the SH1 road bridge, so these extend from Judges Pool up to Hydro Pool.

The Whio Blue Ducks survived as indicated, with two pairs happily cruising around the Major Jones Pool. The extent of the flow along the banks, indicated by the flattening of riverside willows and scrubby bushes, shows the strong force of the torrent.
