2016 DOC Summer Programme – Behind the scenes trips

Every year TRM guests comment that they wish they had heard about the DOC Summer Programme – usually after they arrive to discover the activity or trip they wanted is booked out.  So for 2016 there is no excuse.  For the last four days TRM Daily Report was devoted to the various activities.  Today are the “Behind the scenes  ” activities:

Wild at heart – Kaimanawa horse experience

Monday 11 January 2016 | Behind the scenes, Wildlife. Take a rare and guided visit to the Waiouru Military Base, the Moawhango Ecological District and the home of the wild Kaimanawa horse.

View spectacular scenery not often seen by the public, and learn about the unique management and conservation projects going on to ensure a sustainable environment for military exercises, horses and native flora alike.

Cost: $35 per person

Transport: Bus

This trip crosses through the New Zealand Army training ground. Follow instructions of the trip leader and stay on the guided routes.

Let the Rotokawa Joint Venture together with DOC show you how geothermal energy production and conservation can work side by side.

This exclusive visit to areas not normally accessible to the public, begins with a tour of the Ngā Awa Purua power station to learn about the value of our geothermal resources, then explores the natural wonders that exist within geothermal landscapes.

From cooling towers and turbines, to the exquisite sulphur crystal cliffs, steaming craters and bubbling pits of Lake Rotokawa. Hear all about sustainable energy production, the mining history and the weird and wonderful plants that inhabit the area. Discover why we need to protect these special areas and the importance of pest and weed control.

A day packed full of wonder and discovery not to be missed!

What to bring

  • Waterproof and warm clothing
  • Sturdy walking shoes or tramping boots (gumboots also appropriate)
  • Sunglasses/sunscreen/sun hat

  • Personal first aid kit
  • Personal medication

Power station tour participants must have:

  • Closed, sturdy footwear
  • Long sleeved shirts and long pants – must be covered from ankle to wrist.

Mighty River Power will provide station tour participants with:

  • High vis vests
  • Safety glasses
  • Hard hats
  • ear protection

Be aware

  • Contact lenses may be damaged by geothermal steam or fluid droplets – it’s recommended participants wear eye glasses.
  • Some station equipment may affect pacemakers (electromagnetic fields). Participants with pacemakers should report this to trip leaders prior to/at the commencement of the trip.

Wairakei Wildlife Sanctuary

Monday 18 January 2016 | Behind the scenes, Wildlife. Take a look behind the pest proof fence, meet a takahe and learn how to track kiwi at Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary.

There’s more than golf at Wairakei International Golf Course’s ‘front nine’.

This 180 ha property is now a stunning wildlife sanctuary, kiwi crèche and home to takahe thanks to its two metre high and 5 km long pest-proof fence. Take a look behind the fence with Greening Taupo, meet a takahe and learn how to track kiwi with a DOC Ranger. You may even be lucky enough to see a kiwi!

Tuesday 19 January 2016 | Behind the scenes. This tour gives you a unique look into the significant cultural, environmental and historic sites of the Ngati Hikairo people.

Have you ever wanted to know the origin of the All Black Haka? This tour will take you to Opotaka, where the famous words of “Ka Mate, ka mate” were composed over 200 years ago.

Visit the significant cultural, environmental and historic sites of the Ngati Hikairo people. Learn why the Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park is held in such high reverence to Ngati Hikairo and all the people of New Zealand.
