TRM Daily Reports hardly ever mention Lake Taupo fishing on the Delta or in the Tokaanu Hole as we know even less about that style of fishing than fishing the rivers…  So we pinched the following report off a real fisho – from Russell Nelson’s facebook…

Just back from annual trip to Turangi with North Shore Flyfishing club.

Started fishing the braids section with my great mate Duncan Frew – we fished the Spot x, duncans hole and Russells hole section in middle of the Braids.

I had a great start with 4-5 hooked in first hour and had a healthy lead on my great mate and far better fisherman than me – class gradually showed with him getting the better of me by the afternoon – fish a mixture really- mostly smaller or darker fish with a few silver bullets.

Next day I had the pleasure of hosting Pat Swift – we went out in my FC430CC to the delta Tongariro mouth – fishing was slow and even Pat had to revert to Glo Bugs to hook fish but we hooked about 8 over 4 hours – just relaxed slow fishing with patience getting the rewards.. One large Koura fresh water crayfish was a surprise too!

We moved to the Tokaanu hole and hooked another 5 in an hour and a half – lots fish showing here too – Pat got the largest at over 2kg . All fish at Hole were caught on Boobys.

Next Day took Andrew from the club who had never fished form a boat before so took a while to get used to it. Delta was ok early on with 3 fish but all on the small side and all on Pat swift boobys.  Got another freshwater crayfish too.
Back to the hole and we got two more with one over 2 kgs in good nick – the fish at Tokaanu hole were full of smelt.

Great trip – good to catch plenty of fish each day and I find it personally very satisfying maximising my opportunities that taking the boat brings – this booby fishing opens up lots of opportunities too

As always I stay at Tongariro River Motel – superbly set up for fishing with smoker and tidy fish cleaning area , Ross and Pip great hosts with room for my wee boat – will be back soon.
