(Back by popular demand.. Thank you Kay – what a wonderful way with words – TRM’s poet Laureate. Kay posted this poem after her visit last summer)
“Moved to poetry”
I was a typical ‘Jaffa” visiting Taupo to get away from the big city and enjoy some of the Kiwi countryside. But wandering aimlessly around the Taupo area – as tourists do, a friend suddenly changed my world.
“Come on, he said – “Let me show you around….
This you may not want to hear:
Tourists miss the best attraction –
Hangin’ round Taupo – They miss the action!
Turangi is the place to stay,
With the call of nature – you’ll want to play.
Hiking, biking with mountains near,
The secret places where Trout abound,
Only locals know where these are found.
Tongariro River Motel provides the way:
Here is where you’ll want to stay.
With guided walks to those elusive Trout,
As the river changes it’s course every day,
Fishing Buddies will show you the way.
Then back to enjoy the daily catch,
Never before a feed to match.
The famous Tongariro Rainbow Trout,
Will lure you back without a doubt.
Step right out of your ‘comfort zone’
Join in the fun; enjoy the play,
Exhilaration will be yours today.”
Now a Regular Visitor to the Turangi / Tongariro Region
