The 3-month river graph above shows no decent floods to encourage a big spawning run so far. A few have been sneaking up, but the main runs are waiting for the school holidays to finish.
Anglers returned with reports of a run yesterday, but apart from a few hiding in the tail of Major Jones we could not find them.

Instead, we could not resist taking photos of the other wild life, including 5 of the rare, endangered, protected Blue Ducks patrolling the river and a pair of Pigeons patrolling the river bank.
The group of anglers next to the swing bridge was practising the secrets of the Tongariro Roll Cast by the master caster Herb Spannagl.

There were more anglers out late on Friday morning enjoying the sunny conditions.

| Sporting Life Fly Fishing Updates – Heading into the weekend |
|
| Friday morning and conditions on the Tongariro and surrounding rivers flowing into Lake Taupo are consistent with how the first month and a half of winter has played out, with river flows low and the threat of substantial rain still a distant threat. 22.2 cumecs of flow Friday morning noted in the graph below. |
|
| The next 7 days forecasting sees a couple of days of light rain but not a lot on the way to see much change in the flow of water.
What we have observed and heard from customers though is there are some very healthy 4.5 lb some pushing 6lb fish starting to be caught more consistantly than earlier in winter throughout the days with early mornings and into evening glo bugs/slushies being favoured as the succesful fly and through the day working more natural subdued colour nymphs in smaller profiles with lighter tippets effective when the skies are clear and the sun is out.
It still sounds as though the majortity of the catch are those 2.5lb to 3.5lb rainbows which are putting up a hell of a stink once hooked, fighting above their weight class as a number of anglers have noted.
Wetlining is proving effective for anglers who are covering water swinging flies and we have below a special on some exceptional Intruder/Stinger style flies, (The hook trailing at the back of the fly)
It still doesnt feel quite right on the rivers yet in respect to an expected winter fly fishing season on the Central Plateau and it could well be we have the best yet to come for a number more months, we will keep you updated. Have a fishy weekend and we will see you at Sporting Life.
