Tongariro landscape images

Personal email  for anglers – from Peter Shepherd at DOC:

Hi all,

Just an fyi for your customers/clients that might be visiting the Tongariro River over the coming days, Genesis Energy will be adjusting the river flow due to Rangipo Outages Mon 26th and Wed 28th Sept week from 9:00am to 11:00am.

The Waikato Falls flow  will be released over the Poutu Intake, raising the 16m³/sec minimum to around  26.5m³/sec with flow at Turangi rising to around 43 m³ /sec some 2 to 3 hrs later.

Thought you may wish to know so anglers are aware of the flow increases.  Height change is likely to be measured in the 10cm ballpark, but obviously if it rains, this could change the level further.

For up to date information please visit https://www.genesisenergy.co.nz/tongariro

Kind regards

Peter Shepherd

As indicated in Tongariro River flow for the last week above, the wet soggy conditions elsewhere did not impact much on Turangi.  It is overcast after light rain last night but dry and clear this Monday morning.  Note we had cancellations for Saturday from skiers concerned with rain forecast?  This happens every weekend.  But those returning from Whakapapa ski fields had a great day.  We have our own micro-climate here with relatively low rainfall – it all falls on the ranges around here but not in Turangi.  Photos below taken during ‘normal’ fine weather…

Yesterday TRM Daily report featured “Kia Ora Turangi” with all the tourist attractions locally.  It was well timed to coincide with the NZ Herald travel feature headed “GREAT LAKE TAUPO – THE NEXT BIG THING”.  Once again, as usual, they forgot to mention our cute little tourist town at the southern end of the lake…
13592300_10206594833738689_4865997437096437837_nWe can understand that, we are used to it, as most tourists prefer the 100% pure natural scenery around the National Parks near Turangi.  They come here to get away from all the shops and city congestion to relax and listen to melodies from native birds and smell the sweet fresh air and do other kinky tourist things – that are becoming so rare?  Imagine safely drinking the 100% pure water directly out of mountain streams.  (SWMBO says watch out for crawlies – small fresh water crayfish)
So today, continuing the tourist theme, to add to the images on right, we feature the views available from the hills around Turangi. Readers responses recently to the ‘aerial’ type images from the summit of Mt. Pihanga were extraordinary with hundreds of likes etc.  TRM followed that with an autumn image of Turangi from Mt. Tihia which received similar interest.

Now we take you for a drive and walk a bit further to capture the views from nearby hills – Mt. Tihia.  The images from Mt. Pihanga were provided by a kind inmate who ‘choppered’ up there.
So here are more images of our ‘back yard’ – taken last summer.  If you would like a guided walk up there next summer then book now with TRM.
