Tongariro firing!

This was supposed to be another TRM inmates interview but I have had difficulties loading the video (of Toby & India George) on Youtube so punched the following out instead.  Hopefully – when it finally loads – we will post their entertaining interview tomorrow.  Don’t miss it.

20160830_121855We know the Tongariro trout fishing is not supposed to be a numbers scoring game but just occasionally we cannot resist it.

TRM do not usually get involved in the peeing contest of who caught how many as TRM reports are more about the enjoyment aspects – enjoying the river environment and the challenges involved are just as important.  We all have blank days far too often but perseverance is the name of the game.

This year the trout fishing season for the famous Tongariro winter spawning runs has been very erratic, very late and unpredictable.  Understandably some almost gave up.  TRM wrote up about one Australian angler who was having his worst year ever here at the same time as others were having their best fishing ever, so it has been somewhat ‘hit & miss’.  Some more desperate have ventured further afield to Wanganui, Whakapapa, Mohaka, Rangitikei, wherever, after October 1st opening day but the Tongariro has yielded many more consistently during this last month.  Condition and quality have improved although still not as big or good as last season.

IMG_5691 (1)The most successful have been those that kept the faith and returned again and again knowing that sooner or later they had to strike it right.  Yesterday that happened.

The three TRM inmates in the images – Bruce Hutchings from New Plymouth above right, Scott Collins from Auckland on left and Richard Mowforth also from New Plymouth below all scored well into double figures.

So back to our peeing contest – yesterday in uncomfortable windy conditions during their late afternoon sessions alone, Bruce landed somewhere between 30 & 40, Scott and Richard failed to keep up with only about half that number each, while I slaved away in the laundry.

So finally (it is almost November) we can be brave enough to confirm the Tongariro ‘winter’ spawning runs have peaked.  What great fishing!

Since then YouTube confirmed the video has been published – see below.  It is just too cute – a lovely young girl with charisma together with Pumpkin has to be a winner…
