The times, they are a changing…

Thank you for all the positive response for the concept of a new Great Walk from Turangi to follow the Tongariro River into the Kaimanawa Range.  (see TRM report yesterday) Only DOC have not responded…

If others recommend this route to DOC could they send TRM a cc of their approval – i.e.

Dear DoC

I have done the Milford Track  [non luxury version]  and it was one of the highlights of my life – well done DoC – we have nothing like this at home..

As a regular fly fishing visitor to Turangi from Aus this would definitely encourage me to stay a week longer in NZ/Turangi  and do this walk.

I have seen the chaos on the roads around the current Tongariro Crossing and it is out of control – and unsafe for ordinary road users as well as the walk participants. This has turned me off ever thinking of doing the one day crossing.

Please consider this proposal carefully

Regards

DOC – Taupo fishery managers – changes of minimum size of trout above since 2004 from 45 cm to 40 cm to 35 cm hardly need any explanation…

Compare above charts to a 7 (SEVEN!!!) pound Rainbow Jack landed (& released to breed more of them) in Judges Pool by John Porteous from Ballarat (West Island) recently.  John writes:

I have attached photo of 7lb RT jack from Judges.  Small head and small hook jaw suggest a young fish, possibly only two year old! Also the discoloured globug on pectoral fin – you never foul hook a fish wetlining!
Many anglers have queried how ironical it is that the minimum size was introduced after the fishing improved so much with many 5-6 pound landed in the Tongariro River this season.  A TRM fisho recently landed nine trout for smoking with an average weight over 5 pound. To achieve this he probably released about five times as many over 4 pound.  Extraordinary fishing!  Yes John, he was using a dreaded wet line.
Interesting to compare the recent history of daily bag limits below…
