Lake O closure info.

  ·

Taupo Trout Fishery

Lake Otamangakau will close to fishing for one month starting Sunday 1 February, reopening again on Sunday 1 March.

The February closure is defined within the Taupō Fishing Regulations and aims to protect the lake’s large trout during the hottest month of the year and ensure the long-term sustainability of this unique trophy fishery.

After a cool period, temperatures are set to climb, and we know water temperatures increase rapidly at Lake Otamangakau and regularly exceed 20˚C in February. Technical studies carried out both here and overseas confirm water approaching 20˚C can be lethal to trout, particularly when fish are drawn into the warmest surface water during a rigorous fight with an angler.

Signage has been put in place at the lake to remind anglers of the closure. In addition, Fishery Rangers will regularly attend the lake and surrounding canals to monitor activity and ensure the fishing regulations are respected.

More information about the short closure and the scientific studies that support the closure can be found on our website:
