First Tongariro trout…

CONGRATULATIONS FROM TRM!
Email from guest – his trout may not have been the biggest on the weekend but I bet it will be remembered much longer than the others…
Dear Ross.
Please find attached a picture of my first Tongariro trout.
Thank you for the warm and clean fisher friendly accommodation and sage advice.
We tried the “secret spot” you suggested (that quiet pool immediately below the main river bridge) and started fishing at 0545.  I hope we didn’t wake your other guests with our early start.
It was very much roll casting and tangles by moon (and street) light for the first hour.
Caught the fish at approx 0630.  Saw 5 fish landed and a few others hooked before 8.
I wish you well with your recovery and hope you are back angling on the river again soon.
Regards
Kevin

 TRM Inmates weekend reports:
Fishos exploring down river on the weekend counted 16 anglers in Reeds Pool.  Wow!  Meanwhile other pools in Tongariro middle reaches were deserted.
They report spawning runs appear to have slowed down a tad – fishing for fresh run trout was patchy with some doing well when they found a pocket of trout moving through on their spawning run and others struggled – i.e. Peter & Mike Harvey wasted 2 hours covering Judges Pool without a touch.
Warning – That is possibly due to these sand drifts still moving through the river and covering the gravels.  If you see these sand drifts then move to the next pool.  The sand contains pumice and toxic ash which – so we are told – aggravates the trout gills.  It probably contains 1080 as well by now?  Fortunately Peter & Mike had already caught their usual take home quota.
Above on right is an ecstatic inmate, Wayne Godkin, with his haul from Saturday morning wet lining the Braids.  His catch is more typical of excellent trout condition seen returned to TRM smoker during last week.
On Sunday morning Tony Pennacchia from Melbourne – back again for his annual fix – hooked into 5 and landed 2 within an easy stroll from TRM.
