Blue Pool road agreement secures angler access.

The DOC Taupo Fishery Management Team has entered into an agreement with road owner Hautu Rangipo Whenua Ltd (HRWL) to secure angler access to this popular section of the Tongariro River. As part of the agreement, HRWL recently upgraded the road and extended the car park. The agreement also includes provision for regular maintenance to ensure the road remains in good condition.

This is good news for anglers, who can continue to freely use this privately-owned road to access some of the most beautiful sections of the Tongariro River.

The agreement has a duration of 10 years, which is standard practice in situations like this. Parties will renegotiate once the term comes to an end. Commercial rafting operators also support the access agreement.

Changes indicated from TRM library include:

The access road has been upgraded to remove all the pot holes.
The Whitikau Pool is slowly recovering but is not as good as the original.
The access has been improved since the pine plantation was removed.
A new river bed waiting to happen will bypass Boulder Reach…
The original Breakaway Pool before the river changed course in the late 1990’s.
Access from SH1 after the original Red Hut Bridge was washed out in the 1950’s.
