On each Sunday in 2016 TRM Report has featured stories – blogs – from anglers on why they return again and again to Turangi to fish the mighty Tongariro. Their enthusiasm for this area has been infectious.
Thank you so much to all contributors as it has been the highlight for many regular readers each week. Their standards of journalism and experiences always exceeded the other urgent manufactured daily reports.
But now TRM are widening the net…
Recently, particularly at TRM (and at the Turangi Tavern!), we have met many new refugees who have either moved or are contemplating ‘escaping’ to Turangi (or one of the other delightful smaller holiday settlements around Lake Taupo).
Even more surprising to us – they are all regular subscribers to that well known TRM Daily Report – to get their fix on what is happening in Turangi. For some strange reason they all feel sooooo sorry for SWMBO too?
So we are looking for more enthusiastic refugees to Turangi – not just from Auckland but anywhere else – to ‘fess up’ and tell their story on why they find the laid back life style offered in Turangi such a pleasant relief from city rat race traffic congestion, in addition to just being so much more affordable.
Brace yourselves when comparing property prices…
Did you know that according to the latest NZ Herald Property Report the average price of a house in Turangi (estimate of median value as at 31 April 2016) had risen to – wait for it – $172,700!!! This is still 25% below the 2007 market peak. We are not exaggerating when we suggest there is no where else you can find such property bargains.
But that is only a small part of the story. There are many other attractions which have convinced the new refugees – comparing life style considerations are far more important – which we want to hear about from them.
When you consider the wider benefits – see TRM library photos which capture the more relaxed Kiwi spirit of Turangi – this place offers extraordinary good value.
This is a plea to anyone who has moved recently, or are contemplating a move (or if you know of anyone please pass this on), to ‘blog’ all impressions of their ‘before & after’ situation and the differences of living in a small town surrounded by National Parks in heartland NZ. You will be surprised at the wider interest from more than just unhappy Jaffas…
Many motel guests we have met recently are sick and tired of their continual struggle for survival to pay their massive mortgages and are looking for the right recipe – balance of life style ingredients – to move into heartland NZ.
It may seem unusual to use a motel blog for such (?) interesting stories as normally the local council would or should promote themselves.
But as regular readers will be aware of, our local council is located in another world 50 km north at Taupo and typically, sadly, only promote Taupo.
The advantages of life style in Turangi are conveniently overlooked unless they want some more rates. So we have appeal to you to try to promote it our way…
Thank you in anticipation and we look forward to your contributions.
After writing the above I checked the Herald article which confirms – as follows:
“Aucklanders checking out of the rat race”
“The Auckland housing crisis is infecting the rest of the country Keith Niederer, General Manager of LJ Hooker Harveys Group says right now people can sell their Auckland home and potentially buy a home in another region for half the price.”
(??? For Turangi that should be amended to an eighth of the price)
“With people moving out of Auckland, they’re sick of motorways, hospitals, schools being full. They’d rather have a lifestyle. The regions are coming alive.
Figures from the Real Estate Institute (REINZ) show some people doing just that”….etc.
