If you look closely, this photo from Breakfast Pool Beach shows the height difference of the new bridge deck in the foreground.

As the photo below shows, the old bridge deck sustained damage from mature pine trees floating upright during peak floods, so it might last longer.

Discussion between anglers continues on the likely new name for the replacement swingbridge.

To briefly summarise, previously everyone was confused, by thinking the existing bridge which is to be demolished, was named after the Major from Major Jones Pool.  But no, it was named after the Army Major from Waiouru who supervised the construction by Army engineers in 1955.

So now everyone is wondering what the new bridge might be called, and whether it will be English or Maori.   Wow!  Names can get so sensitive locally.

We can hear you sucking in your gums from here!  i.e. Today TRM have been criticised again for referring to Taupo using the more phonetically correct “Toe-Paw”, as promoted by the council over 7 years ago.  But when we suggested they have been calling it wrong by abbreviating it for over one hundred years, they went all quiet.  If they want to be historically correct, the proper name is… Taupō-nui-a-Tia.  OK?
