For anglers weekend viewing pleasure (?), an interesting historical 16 minute video on the Tongariro Hydro Power Project that reshaped the Tongariro River and this entire region 50 years ago.

From a thousand square mile watershed, the latent force of many rivers was channelled into the Tongariro River….  Anglers concerns will be answered with the protection measures 50 years ago to protect the Tokaanu spawning stream and provision of fish ladders and tunnels under the Poutu canal.  Also of interest is brief footage of excavations with Government archaeologist Trevor Hosking, which unearthed rare pre maori artefacts which were displayed in the Turangi museum..
