Trout fishing in “other” remote North Island regions…

This excellent short video has done the rounds on facebook recently.

It is worth watching to get you in a positive mood for discovering new summer dry fly casting rivers – keeping in mind that this region hardly ever features on fb or youtube as much as it deserves.

That is why we posted it.

The Wellington fishos remain shy about saying too much in case it is “discovered” by visiting anglers from overseas.

With the tourist season almost upon us the vast majority waste most of their time traveling to the South Island and driving and walking and wading but often not too much actually fishing.  They often drive through this lower North Island –  Wellington – region to get there.

Anglers from overseas – USA, Australia, etc. get directed at the South Island via many lodges and promotional stuff on the web while these North Island regions are neglected.  We have even been accused of hiding them!.

In this Central North Island region most of the main rivers immediately to the east of Taupo – i.e.  Mohaka, Ngaruroro, etc. in the Kaimanawas, Ruakituri to the north, Rangitikei to the south, etc. – get over fished from heli-lifted anglers out of Taupo for the next few months while there are other vast remote regions (think Taranaki beyond the Wanganui & Whakapapa and Wellington regions) that hardly see any visiting anglers – only locals know these special places.  OK?

If you wish to follow up on some of these remote regions where you hardly ever see a footprint then contact TRM guides:
