DOC Summer Programme 2016 – Wildlife trips

Every year TRM guests comment that they wish they had heard about the DOC Summer Programme – usually after they arrive to discover the activity or trip they wanted is booked out.  So for 2016 there is no excuse.  For the last three days TRM Daily Report has been devoted to the various activities.  Today are the “Wildlife” activities:

Wild at heart – Kaimanawa horse experience

Monday 11 January 2016 | Behind the scenes, Wildlife. Take a rare and guided visit to the Waiouru Military Base, the Moawhango Ecological District and the home of the wild Kaimanawa horse.

View spectacular scenery not often seen by the public, and learn about the unique management and conservation projects going on to ensure a sustainable environment for military exercises, horses and native flora alike.

Cost: $35 per person

Age: 6+

Grade: 1

Transport: Bus

Maximum participants: 70

This trip crosses through the New Zealand Army training ground. Follow instructions of the trip leader and stay on the guided routes.

Jump onboard a raft and get set to explore the Grade 3, upper part of the Tongariro River. Hear about this unique and iconic local bird and discuss how you can be a part of ensuring these white water specialists stick around for many years to come.

Finish up with a visit to the new whio crèche at the Tongariro National Trout Centre.

Monday 18 January 2016 | Behind the scenes, Wildlife. Take a look behind the pest proof fence, meet a takahe and learn how to track kiwi at Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary.

There’s more than golf at Wairakei International Golf Course’s ‘front nine’.

This 180 ha property is now a stunning wildlife sanctuary, kiwi crèche and home to takahe thanks to its two metre high and 5 km long pest-proof fence. Take a look behind the fence with Greening Taupo, meet a takahe and learn how to track kiwi with a DOC Ranger. You may even be lucky enough to see a kiwi!
