Lake O update…

Photos of the wide variety of unusual fishing watercraft suitable for Lake O. – which makes it so popular and affordable for all anglers.

The GOOD NEWS & the BAD NEWS:

Somehow the conspiracy theorists, aka fishos at Lake O, have started a rumour that DOC are considering closing Lake O in February due to soaring water temperatures threatening trout stocks?

TRM asked DOC for a clarification from DOC who immediately replied (Thanks DOC) as follows:

“We can assure you and your guests that any possible regulation changes at Lake O will not take effect this February. Our December newsletter carried an article highlighting a report which sets out potential future management options.”

DOC’s December newsletter:

“Great conditions for trout at Lake Otamangakau. Surface water temperature data from Lake O confirms an upward trend as we reach early summer, but current conditions are no concern for hungry trout. In fact, the additional warmth has increased insect activity and enhanced the supply of food.

At the start of the season the temperature was around 8.5 degrees C. Over the last week surface temperatures ranged from 11 to 15 degrees. Given the elevated mountain setting, temperatures will fluctuate but the general upward trend will continue.

Historical data suggests that by February elevated surface temperatures will regularly pose a significant threat to trout. Therefore, during February, we will once again provide anglers with a weekly advisory notice to assist with planning. Looking ahead we will shortly highlight a report that summarises a body of research and outlines possible management options for this iconic trout fishing venue.”

Then there is the “GOOD NEWS”...

After reflecting on the struggles with weed etc. and disappointing results of some other fishos at Lake O during the New Year holiday period, TRM cannot resist teasing you. An anon angler, a regular Lake O disciple, departed today after five days fishing on Lake O to record his BEST EVER result of 81 (all released) over the last five days. For more detailed info on how, where, when, why, flies, methods, techniques, etc. you will need to stay at TRM… But please do not ask SWMBO! Photos show some of the types of water craft more suitable at Lake O… (hint, hint)
