Turangi appears to have earned an unfortunate reputation for petty crime… Once it may have been deserved?. TRM may have contributed to this with our reports of kids pinching our bikes, etc. so perhaps it is time for us to reveal what it is really like trying to survive in small town NZ.

Each week we get a detailed Crime Report from the police to keep everyone informed of where burglaries happened and what to watch out for. Compare the following reports to where you live and you might appreciate why small town in NZ are so popular:

Subject: Weekly Report
18 April – Hi all
This week we have reports of Theft 2 and Family Harm 7. In a drive-off, $60 worth of petrol was stolen from Z Station on 13/4 and on the 15/4 on Te Rangitautahanga Road, an EFTPOS card was stolen from a table whilst the victim was having lunch -it has been used twice since it was taken. That’s our lot, have a safe and happy Easter weekend and don’t forget to report anything suspicious by calling 111.

11 April 2019Hi all
Great news! We have a clean slate this week, so here are a few little tips to help tackle some of the most common issues our streets and communities face. Sometimes it’s as simple as installing a smoke detector or driving to the road conditions to help stop a potential tragedy.
Keep your home safe by ensuring your windows and doors have secure latches and locks, deadlocks if possible. Have your sheds and garages secure too and lock away tools and ladders which can be used to gain entry into your house etc. Install sensor lights and a monitored alarm if you’re able to.
To help reduce the possibility of having your vehicle stolen of broken into, keep your keys with you and spares at home, not hidden on the car – thieves will find it. Always lock your car and make sure you don’t leave your valuables visible inside.
Tomorrow is the last day of school so if you’re going away on holiday, do let your neighbours know and leave your details with someone so you can be contacted in case of an emergency. Get someone to empty your mailbox and have a great holiday.
Cheers
Kathy
