One of the main advantages of the Tongariro and other tributaries and rivers feeding into Lake Taupo is that they are open all year when many other lakes and rivers are closed for spawning at the end of May.
But trout fishos are not limited to just the Taupo rivers.

One of the most popular day trips from TRM is to the Wanganui River – about one hour drive west of Turangi.
