TMTB makes submission on Resource Management Amendment Bill
July 5, 2024
The Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board regularly makes submissions on legislation and regulations that could potentially affect Ngāti Tūwharetoa whānau, hapū and the iwi as a whole.
The latest such submission is on the Resource Management (Freshwater and Other Matters) Amendment Bill.
If this bill becomes law, it will affect the following changes:
- Exclude the hierarchy of obligations in the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPS-FM) from resource consenting. This will address concerns raised about the way it is being applied while a review and replacement of the NPS-FM is undertaken.
TRM try to stay out of any such political nonsense but we received questions on this proposal from a bewildered tourist angler inmate who referred it to us to send it to MP Shane Jones. Instead, we ask for your opinion and sent it to the Fishery Managers DOC and the Taupo Council for their comment. (Don’t hold your breath…)
TRM have had an application for developing new units for anglers in with Taupo Council planners for over 18 months now and are still being declined. Yet this far wider-reaching submission could exclude the local tribe from any obligations of the Resource Act.
