Now for a complete change in direction… In response to a prospective inmate comment – their booking was based on the description of Unit 6? – I dialed up the OTA (Online Travel Agents) to see how they described TRM’s larger family units? Even I was shocked.
Judging by the prose, it must have been composed by SWMBO as the composer did not believe in paragraphs or sub-headings, so I have added them and images to make it almost readable? I could hardly believe what I read! She must have been at the cooking sherry – again?
Descriptions:
Unit 3:
Sleeps 2-5: Double and single in main bedroom, 2 singles in rear bedroom Unit 3 is a two bedroom unit with two beds in each room so ideal for 4 individual anglers or a family group. It has a carport that is long enough for an outside table for watching sunsets.
The lounge/living area has the dining table separated from the kitchen by a tall buffet unit, so the kitchen sink bench cannot be seen from the living area. This is considered important for parents with kids when all the dishes have been used and are waiting to be washed and dried by the kids as they cannot be seen from the TV viewing area. The larger bedroom has a double and single bed and a second TV. The bathroom is the same as all the others with shower box, hand vanity hand basin set up and separate wc.
As you enter you might wonder about coat hooks located along the wall behind the two couches?. They are reserved exclusively for fly rods. TRM inmates like to admire their rods. These are never to be used for heavy hand bags or coats which can suffer irreparable damage if hung on rod hooks. True! All other units have similar rod hooks – a special feature of TRM.
Units 4 & 5:
These are our biggest family units. They are the same size similar to a two bedroom house with reversed layouts. In Auckland they would sell for way over $?million each.
Unit 4 has an additional single bed in the back of the living area whilst Unit 5 has a fold down double couch.
The main bedrooms both have double queen size beds and the rear bedrooms have three single beds. The units are separated by a wide double carport which usually has one or two bbq’s set up and still plenty of room for a bike rack for TRM’s special bikes. These are so specialised we are tempted to tell you more but sadly this is restricted to a boring specification of the units and not the bikes.
Both are family units with long living area stretching from front northern side to the rear providing heaps of room for anything. Sometimes both units are booked by larger family groups wanting to hold parties in the car ports separating the units. Sometimes these larger groups are called fishing clubs whereby the inmates are not always related or may not even have known each other before but they always leave as best buddies.
The larger kitchens each have full size fridge freezer units to accommodate all the frozen trout. When the next catch arrives the previous catch is either smoked or transferred to huge commercial freezers in a hidden secret lock-up.
The most regular inmates in these units are the …… – anglers from Auckland who have been coming to TRM for over 40 years. So that would confirm that these units are definitely retro fitted.
An important feature of these units are the warm northerly aspect – particularly during the winter months. Big wide ranch-sliders at the front suck in all the solar warmth on chilly damp winter days so they should be popular. (For more info on the bikes go to TRM website 🙂

Unit 6: arguably TRM’s best unit due to the over-the-top fitout.
Special features include an anglers pantry. We should explain… TRM is very popular for anglers wanting to “invest” longer periods in Turangi due to the close proximity of a river – after which the motel has been named. All time spent fishing the Tongariro is never allocated to usual physical longevity, so anglers live longer than common folk. The world famous river is also full of giant trout. OK?
So when anglers stay longer they need plush comfy fittings and all the little extras such as the pantry to save them buying sauces and spices and flour and all that other cooking stuff. It also has additional furniture for the extensive anglers library and dvd’s. Other little extras include a thingy to keep it cooler in Summer. West Islanders expect these thingys.
Unit 6 has no less than four rod hooks, two bedrooms, master bedroom with additional tv, second bedroom with two single beds plus another bed in the back of the dining room. (Note we said “room”!)
From the carport the ranch slider opens into the living room – tv lounge – on a lower level to the rest of the unit. It is called split level living. A single step is required up to the dining room.
The kitchen has much more storage for long term guests too with a buffet unit overlooking the tv lounge and dining room. This enables the appointed dish washer to watch tv at the same time to prove anglers can multi task.
The larger bathroom is a treat – a memorable architectural experience featuring genuine original artificial Italian organic marble wall linings. Really quite amazing retro decor which should be preserved with a protection order…
