This morning the NZ Herald published a 32 page supplement of all the bike trails from Coromandel to Southland. So?
Unbelievably they missed the most important one!
The Tongariro River Trail.
They should be sued!
Whilst we want to promote biking everywhere we have to question their prioritites. Perhaps we forgot to advertise with them? Or more likely, Taupo only wanted their tracks mentioned?
Perhaps TRM should send them an account?
As we are promoting recreational biking we should also mention the Great NZ Trek. This is now gearing up for the 2017 stage 12 heading south from Fairlea.
It started at Cape Reinga to Kohukohu ten years ago and every year a group of bikers and walkers and horse riders have completed another stage.
Over fifty trekkers have completed every stage.
Dates for the stage 12 have been set….4th to 12th March 2017.
They are looking at starting in the Burkes Pass area just west of Fairlie. From here we will head South crossing over the Ohau C power station at the top of Lake Benmore and then down to Omarama for the rest day. After the rest day we go South over the Omarama saddle to Saint Bathans. From Saint Bathans there will be one days trekking towards Alexandra.
As planning is still in the early stages and we will update as the route developed.
Following ‘slide-show’ is my version of the North Island stages to provide some images of what it is all about… just in case you are interested? It is a great challenge and a lot of fun.
