I had enthusiastically collected too much pumice from Lake Taupo for the boundary fences – anything to get out of the laundry… and did not want to return it.
The truth is it was supposed to resemble a traditional koru but unfortunately slowly unwound after erection.
The reinforcing steel had a ‘memory’ and tried to straighten out as it warmed up in the sun?
So we were left with little choice but to watch it unfurl to a quirky shape to encourage discussion and abstract interpretation.
Now they look more like an unfortunate accident – very similar to TRM’s management style.
So what is a “Koru”? –
From encyclopedia of NZ :
The koru, which is often used in Māori art as a symbol of creation, is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, and its inward coil suggests a return to the point of origin.
If that is too confusing then ask SWMBO to explain.
The koru therefore symbolises the way in which life both changes and stays the same.
A bit like TRM and Turangi I suppose…
