TRM inmates suggested that if this was located in the South Island it would now be promoted as a tourist mountain bike trail…

Kaimanawa Road access is only about 15 minutes driving time from Turangi south on SH1.

The last trampers we collected from there were amazed at the mountain bikes already traversing the bike trails evident in the photos between the peaks.

Kaimanawa Road also provides car access to other tourist attractions including the Pillars of Hercules at the northern end of DOC managed trail to Tree Trunk Gorge and provides access to two DOC freedom camping grounds at the base of each track to climb up to the bike tracks along the ridge.

When Genesis opens the underground power station for public tourism -the only underground power station in the North Island – then this will be a popular tourist trail.
