Tokaanu Wharf is now blocked off from the public. It is still mentioned in most of the publicity brochures of “what to do in Turangi” as suitable for a pleasant stroll. Sadly no more… Only seagulls are permitted.

Back in the 1880s, there were few roads in Taupo.
Goods were shipped across Lake Taupo from Tokaanu Wharf.
Regular boat services stopped in the 1920s but this piece of Kiwi history lives on.
In 2003, the wharf was lovingly restored with original beams and decking.

The original wharf was built about 1870

Now it is blocked off to the public – no doubt another “Health & Safety” casualty. The memories of kids’ cat fish contests is all that is left. It is still a destination for “birders” with swans and ducks and other waders waiting to have their photos taken.
