If you are planning to add the Tongariro Crossing on your bucket list, then you must view TRM’s video below…
For tourist considering tramping the Tongariro Crossing this summer DOC have tried to reduce tourist pressure points by revising all the parking rules, to minimise shuttle bus congestion, long delays and crowding on the track, etc.
But, so far, according to TRM inmates, it is still a big expensive hassle.
A much better option for a fine day is to climb Mt. Ruapehu instead.
Far less distance to walk, better wider views, ample parking, a scenic ride up the ski lifts half way, even a choice of cafes on route, a much better rewarding challenge and – most important – no crowding or delays.
Then TRM do not get complaints either..
We were reminded after TRM have just had overseas tourists who have done both in the last week and voted the Ruapehu climb as a superior tourist experience in every way.
Possibly too early for some families yet (?) as there is still some snow but most of this will have melted away by mid January 2018 – see images on right..
Have another squiz at TRM’s video above.
If this looks too daunting, or the weather is not good enough, then consider three other walks instead – a 1 hour river walk, a 2 hour hidden lake walk, plus a 2 hour alpine walk to a spectacular waterfall.
Far better options with more variety and better scenery and more options to back out at any stage if the weather looks questionable.
Do not take any risks with the weather on the central plateau – it can change suddenly without warning. OK?
