Extracts from the SH1 Tīrau to Waiouru maintenance update
We’re still hard at it on the SH1 Tīrau to Waiouru Accelerated Maintenance project (T2W) and have a lot to celebrate! More than 97 percent of the work has now been completed – just 2 sites remain:Taupō to Tūrangi – Picking up where it left off in late 2025, night work began last Wednesday (18 March) at the SH1/Kiko Road intersection and is expected to take around 8 shifts to complete (weather dependent). Once finished, the crew will move to the southern end of Motuoapa, where approximately 14 night shifts will be required. Work will take place Sunday to Thursday, between 7pm and 6am, under stop/go traffic management. Outside of these hours, the road will remain open to traffic, with temporary speed restrictions in place.

Last but not least
The final countdown is on in T2W’s last zone, Taupō to Tūrangi, where night work has started near Motuoapa. Unrelated to the non-T2W work that began in the township in late January and knocked off last week, we’ve returned to finish rebuilding 0.4km of road at the SH1/Kiko Road intersection, and when that’s done, we’ll do the same on 1km of road at the southern end of Motuoapa. To minimise disruption, it’s all happening under overnight stop/go, with 2 lanes open during the day under temporary speed limits.
