We apologise. Yesterday TRM posted the circus on Major Jones Pool above with eight anglers and two canoes creating chaos.

Out of concern that it might discourage novice Tongariro anglers, today we checked again during peak hour on Saturday midday. The weather was fine, warm, a little wind, just beautiful. This is mentioned as we met a local guide who mentioned his clients cancelled due to the weather… Thanks TV1.

So the photos below are to apologise to correct any wrong impressions, to encourage anglers who might have been misled by TRM’s post below.

In particular, have a squiz at the angler above hiding in the bushes and roll casting from the shore. We identified him as a local by his casual lazy casting style and lack of waders. The absence of the usual Simms fishing terrorist uniform and tackle boxes and landing net etc. was the giveaway. All he had was a rod. He should be reported to Creel or Sporting Life tackle shops, but he kept his hoodie up so he could not be recognised. In a brief time, almost 5 minutes, he hooked, landed and released three magnificent good-conditioned, fresh-run silver Rainbow trout.

I tried to convince two tourists who joined me watching that it is always that easy, but I suspect they might not have believed me. Tourists cannot imagine Turangi have such a beautiful river full of wild trout in close walking distance from the motels. They might have been from West Island. They were so amazed and suggested someone should promote it. Now there’s an idea.

During our lap around the town pools we spotted or spooked trout in every pool or riffle. See, it must be that easy.

There were four decent trout waiting for tourists in this photo below the SH1 road bridge.

Another growing tourist attraction (is that a pun?) is Turangi’s famous Dr. Suess tree in Taupahi Road. Look at the lush foliage. Surely the Council will not destroy it now…

Look at the weather. No wonder the anglers stay away.
