Fishy update

img_6155In no particular order the team from Brisbane are Brian, Neil, Marcus & Steve inspecting the Tongariro River below Major Jones Pool last week.  In the 50 metres below the ‘flying fox’ wire (see in the background) they counted more trout than seen in their entire South Island trip last year.  They were comparing their holiday fishing the Mataura near Gore to the mighty Tongariro so TRM offered to show them why the Tongariro is so much more productive all year round.

photo-by-toby-george-4So they have confirmed they are now Tongariro junkies.  They have been coming to NZ to fish as a team for over ten years and know most of the rivers.  So now they just have to catch them…

So many tourists (and anglers!) walk past these shallow spawning beds every day without realising many of those stones in the river have wavy tails.

This is one of the best spots on the river to watch their mating behaviour over the redds where the jacks are protecting their nest fighting off any competition.  You can see the hens flashing silver flanks as they lay their eggs and the jacks moving in to cover them.

What a great spot to educate the kids too.

Above is an update of TRM’s other manager Pumpkin keeping cool – thank you to Toby George who was with enthusiastic 6 1/2 year old daughter India taking Pumpkin walkies.  As you can see, Pumpkin adored her attention.

Just a quick update

from local fishing guide Mike Hughes.

Beautiful Spring weather in Turangi today and pleasantly warm once the sun chased away the early morning chill.

I didn’t get to the river until 10.00 am and with no cars parked in Koura street decided to head to Judges. Walking down the track I was surprised how few anglers there were … just one in the Breakfast pool.

Even my favourite town pool was empty and I didn’t see a soul the whole time I was there.

Anglers may have been thin on the ground but the fish certainly weren’t.

The Tongariro is firing at the moment and I had a great day moving up and down the pool chopping and changing methods.

All the fish pictured came on the czech nymph. But I also caught fish on the indicator and under the dry. And things didn’t really slow down until I finally moved on later in the afternoon.

So with the holiday weekend coming up things are looking good. See you out there.

Tight lines
