cliff-view-down-river On a beautiful summer day like this we all know where we should be…

Following another enquiry – also from the UK – on raft fishing the upper Tongariro River, SWMBO suggested it is time for another reminder.

This is one trip TRM strongly recommend.  Every angler, every fisho, every novice should have it at the top of his/her bucket list!

If you want to know more, TRM also refer you to the latest Trout Fisher magazine which has a 4 page glossy spread by Andrew headed “Upper Tongariro Rafting” on pages 6-9.

It is almost an excellent feature except it fails to recommend the best place to stay.

Not to be outdone by the Trout Fisher magazine,  the following is a repeat of Andrew’s TRM advertorial version:

cliff-view-up-river What happens when you combine the expert services of two leaders in their respective fields?  Come raft fishing with Rafting New Zealand this summer and find out!

Rafting New Zealand in conjunction with Andrew Christmas Fishing Guide are proud to offer the ultimate in fly fishing adventures – raft fishing on the spectacular upper Tongariro river

This upper river water beyond the winter limit opens for angling every year on the 1st of December and is only really accessible via the river.

This allows anglers to get into untouched water to fish for resident and spawning fish.

December and January are popular months with anglers as the upper river holds huge numbers of trout at this time of year due to late spawning fish from Lake Taupo.

(TRM addition: But from February the early runs start.  Every angler knows the biggest trout start their spawning run early.)

hooked-up-in-the-gorge This is a great activity to do if you are a fly fishing enthusiast wanting peace and solitude and/or if you are looking for an adventure fishing trip, combining an awesome ride down many exciting rapids with beautiful scenery and of course excellent fishing.

So grab your best mate, your wife or even the whole family, there is plenty to do for people who don’t fish. They can sit back in the sun on the warm sand, enjoy a good book, as well as swim in the refreshing water, before helping to tackle the next rapid to get you to the next hot spot for fishing.

raft-fishing-the-tongariro From a fishing point of view we work on one or two anglers per fishing guide, this enables us to cover the water properly for you and give you the best service.

Anglers with varying capabilities are welcome, as the upper river provides great opportunities for everybody and is flexible for the use in all methods of fly fishing, from wet-lining, nymphing and dry fly in the afternoon sun.

stuart-hooked-up-again Nymphing is our most preferred method and this will ensure many solid hook-ups from deep swirly pools that even the best Polaroid’s can’t penetrate.

A large terrestrial dry fly with a small natural off the bottom would also be a great option in the summer with good numbers of Cicadas and great evening mayfly hatches.

stuart-nicol-fishing-opposite-the-launch-site The beauty of our trips is that you get unequalled service. You get two guides for the price of one.

Your professional NZ Rafting river guide will expertly navigate you through the rapids and deliver you at the pristine fishing pools, from here your fishing guide will take over, so you can get stalking in the gin clear water.

Everything is provided when you raft fish with us – gourmet food, beverages, camping equipment, transport and expert guides.

stuarts-small-rainbow-on-upper-tongariro We pride ourselves on our expert knowledge and skills, small clients to guide ratios (2:1), our excellent customer service and the quality of our trips.
