Emirates is lobbying hard to make the next Americas Cup a fresh water event and are pushing for the Tokaanu Sailing Club to host the event. Taupo councillors are outraged saying that the host town, Turangi, deserves nothing! Emirates is looking to pour billions of dollars into local infrastructure to support the event. CEO of Emirates, Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a keen cyclist and fly fisherman, intends to make Turangi the hub of cycling in NZ. He said, “Turangi is already the fly fishing capital of the world, I want it to also be the adventure cycling capital of the world. Just imagine, Fly fishing, cycling and sailing … paradise on earth!”
