NEWSFLASH:
(Image on right of Wilderness Magazine journalists - Pippa Brown and Dee Taylor – scoping the route for the Tongariro River Trail (“TRT”). Note the “temporary” wood trunk stepping stones installed by DoC. Permanent larger safe stepping stones across several other Tongariro River tributary streams will be a fun feature on all the TRT stream crossings.)
Tongariro RIver anglers and TRM inmates and anyone else interested – recreational hikers, mountain bikers, tourists, etc. – in the extension of anglers’ access tracks for the project known as the Tongariro River Trail (“TRT”) will be able to view a live webcast of the dvd and power point presentation by the Advocates for the Tongariro River to the Taupo District Council.
Quote from Taupo Times: “Given the unprecedented interest in the webcast….etc.”?
The Taupo District Council meeting will begin at 1 pm on Tuesday 20 July with the TRT dvd and power point presentation by The Advocates for the Tongariro RIver.
Anyone wanting to learn more about the TRT project can gain access via a link from the council website www.taupo.govt.nz
These TRT extensions will link and extend existing anglers’ access tracks up beyond the present limits beyond the Fence Pool (winter limit) through to Poutu Intake and Pillars of Hercules to Tree Trunk Gorge.
This will effectively double the fishing access presently available to anglers into the upper Tongariro river through the prison farm and beyond.
Previously this 14 km upper river was only accessible and fishable by rafting trips.
Fishing Report:
Last weekend signalled the end of school holidays. Now the serious winter run fishing starts… Anglers were again poised in anticipation for a wet weekend based on Met/TV forecasts. TRM even had cancellations – again – due to the wet forecast. Look at what we got…
The Tongariro increased from 24 to 25 m3/s for a short period. Wow! Even so that was enough to encourage spawning migrations of trout moving up river.
TRM fishos report mixed results. i.e. WB returned yesterday by 6 am with his limit bag. He did the same on Saturday. (This proves the early bird gets the worm.) After celebrating the AB’s win, other inmates understandably fished office hours… They did not do so well. Plenty of limit bags of good fresh trout taken at road bridge, mainly by locals in the usual scrum. Huge mob of trout under Red Hut Bridge would not respond to all manner of lures drifted down to them. Four big browns sighted up river were stalked but refused to open their mouths to anything offered. I think they must be waiting for Boof and me…
