Fishing Report

Thank you for messages on the exciting new possibilities for river bank fishing mentioned in yesterday’s report.  But – unbelievably – TRM have already been scooped.  If you search the "Advocates" web site (go to Links) then you will find they have already posted photos which identify the special place.  But we have to save ours until Friday until Boof has completed his inspection.

First photo today is regular Australian angler/guest from Ballarat – John Porteous.  Those big dark shapes in the water beside him are resting trout.  But do you think we could entice them to take a cicada…  They would leap a metre out of the water after dragon flies but ignored our offerings.

Worse, to add insult to injury, Brent Purser caught two on his usual weighted h&c nymph combo but we aspiring dry fly anglers struggled.

These photos were taken along this "new" stretch of water which we will elaborate on in Friday’s report with more photos to illustrate the location for you.

Now another letter from kind guests who, as seen in the photos, bottled their trout.  This is a wonderful method to preserve them.  In our office we still have two "Agee" preserving jars left over from the 1960′s but we are not brave enough to try them.

Hi Ross and of couse Pip,

Sorry for the slow contact – have been really busy since returning a week ago and feel like we need another holiday already although not with all the dramas that we had last week.We really enjoyed our stay at your motel and especially the ‘friendly’ management, morning paper, sky tv ,and helpful advice.

We  had a great unit and facilities and hope to return again later in the year and with luck we wont destroy the boats windscreen, go round and round on a windy lake while inconsiderate rangers stop us (twice in a week ) to check licences and ask silly survey questions. The different crews obviously dont communicate with each other or crosscheck lists to see who they have stopped before. Our lines had just been put out in about a 15-20knot winds and not being able to retrieve everything quick enough we lost favorite lures as a result. Mind you we lost a bit of other gear including a downrigger ball that cost $24-95 in Hastings and $50 in Turangi to replace. The excuse was that lead had gone up in price. Maybe we are all stupid and its not greed at all!!! We wont get caught again.

Plenty of fish were caught to keep us interested albeit that the were mostly undersized but we did manage to get enough to do a few bottles in the pressure cooker. (Photo above right).

The fish in Helens right hand is approx 41/2-5lb (photo left) and is the biggest fish we have landed on the lake in over 5 years. Caught in Stump Bay. The reduction in legal size on the 1st July to 40cm I am sure will be welcomed by a lot fisherman. Smaller good condition fish make better ‘Dip or Pate.’ Yum!  Recipe is in the book you lent me. I just hope that there will be enough fish to catch.

The only downside of or visit was the restaurants.(Not the RSA). ——– (edited out – check local restaurants with Pip at the office!)

Well Ross, thankyou again and especially for the river trout. Yet to try it and will let you know.

See you again later in the year.

All the best and ‘tight lines’.

Cheers

Helen and Kevin.

PS Will leave you to edit this any way you see fit.
